A sanctuary for women and children escaping violence.
The Gamp Haven Shelter
The Issue
According to the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, 45% of women in Nigeria have experienced physical or emotional abuse from a partner (NDHS, 2018). Yet, safe shelters are scarce, with fewer than 20 functional domestic violence shelters across the entire country. Many women remain in abusive homes simply because they have nowhere else to go. Here are some alarming statistics:
- 45% of Nigerian women aged 15–49 have experienced physical or emotional violence from a partner (NDHS 2018).
- 1 in 4 Nigerian children witnesses domestic violence before age 10.
- Fewer than 20 functional domestic violence shelters exist across the country, despite a population of over 200 million.45% of Nigerian women aged 15–49 have experienced physical or emotional violence from a partner (NDHS 2018).
- Emotional and financial abuse, though deeply damaging, are often dismissed as “private matters” and rarely reported.
- In many communities, 30–35% of women believe a husband is justified in beating his wife under certain conditions (UN Women/NDHS).
- Survivors face stigma, victim-blaming, and a lack of safe alternatives, causing many to remain in abusive environments.
